The Best Scoop of the Week honor goes to Dawn of The Way I See Things!!! Anyone who’s blog makes them T.W.I.S.T. is cool by me.

The Way I See Things

“What one thing that has happened in your life has made the biggest impact on who you are today?”
Wow!  That is SOME question.  I’ve been giving it a lot thought since you first asked me and I’d have to say it was my relationship with my Aunt Nanci.  My Aunt (who was also my godmother) meant the world to me.  She was truly a 2nd mom and, as adults, we were also great friends.    Without going into too much detail, let’s just say that I had an extremely adversarial relationship with both of my parents.  I didn’t get the sense that they got much pleasure in having kids (there wasn’t a ton of “fun” in my house).  I grew up in a home where fighting was the norm, fun foods (like pop tarts and fruit loops) were NEVER found, and family members seldom enjoyed each other’s company.   Luckily for me, my parents “shipped me off” to Syracuse, NY during the summers to spend time with my Aunt and cousins.  My Aunt Nanci was the complete opposite of my parents.  (We often wondered how she and my Dad were related!)   She was silly and funny and laid back.  She embraced the thrill of slime as much as we did.  She danced in her car.  She picked berries.   She loved being a MOM and her kids absolutely adored her.  So did I.
I spent most of my teen years fighting with my parents and spending as much free time as I could with my closest friends.  Through the tough years, I knew my Aunt always had my back.  As I grew into a young woman she became a true friend to me.  We so enjoyed each other’s company and got together socially as often as we could.  We agreed that we would’ve still been friends had we not been related!  When I became a parent I knew that my AUNT would be my role model (DEFINITELY NOT MY MOM OR DAD!)  It came as no surprise that my Aunt would play a major role in the lives of my boys — she spoiled them with her love and whimsical spirit and became their “Fairy Godmother” (which they called her always!)  Some of my happiest childhood memories are moments I spent with her and all I’ve ever wanted is to be like her!
While my Aunt Nanci is no longer here (she passed away a few years ago from cancer), I know she is with me always.  She showed me how parenting isn’t a chore but something to cherish; that parents and children don’t always have to fight; that it’s okay to be young at heart and show it to the world.  I can’t imagine what kind of woman I’d be today without having the love and support of my Aunt.
